This Wilderness area contains one of the largest old growth forest tracts in the eastern US and features miles of hiking trails. Primative camping areas can be found throughout making this a good spot for overnight backpacking trips. Some trails can be steep and narrow with many peaks above 5,000 feet.
From Robbinsville, take US 129 north about 6-8 miles. Turn left onto Joyce Kilmer Road. Parking area is located at the end of this road just past the intersection with Santeetlah Rd. / County Rd. 1127.
